Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease wherein your bodys immunity attacks its own tissues. RA affects the joints and causes chronic inflammation that may result in permanent joint destruction and deformity. It is a systemic disease that can affect other organs as well.
The symptoms of RA show up when the tissues get inflamed and subside when the disease is inactive. The symptoms include muscle and joint stiffness, inflamed joints which are red, tender and painful, fatigue, loss of energy and difficulty in carrying out normal day to day tasks.
In some people, RA affects other organs including eyes, lungs, and the tissues around the heart. Sufferers of RA are found to have a higher risk of anemia, heart attack, vasculitis, lymphoma, and carpal tunnel syndrome.
Gout/High Uric Acid Level (Hyperuricemia)
When uric acid builds up in blood it is called hyperuricemia. Normal Uric acid levels are 2.4-6.0 mg/dL (female) and 3.4-7.0 mg/dL (male). When there is an increase in the uric acid level it gets deposited as crystals in the joints. This causes pain, joint destruction, kidney stones, and impaired kidney function.
The common causes of hyperuricemia include high purine diet, problem in excretion of uric acid, reduced fluid intake, excessive alcohol or caffeine intake, certain medications and obesity.
Gouty arthritis is caused when the needle like uric acid crystals cause inflammation in the joints. It affects the big toe most commonly while other joints get affected too. In the initial stages, it remains asymptomatic and passive. In some people, it causes sudden throbbing pain in the joints especially at night. This kind of sudden sharp pain is called Acute Gout Attack.
Arthritis is a condition without cure. Hence treatment is mostly a symptomatic management of the condition. Allopathy uses steroids, NSAIDs, anti rheumatic drugs and other medications to treat arthritis and to reduce inflammation. At times, sufferers find it difficult to tolerate the side effects of these drugs and resort to other pain management techniques like hot fomentation and massage. Local applications like capsaicin creams offer temporary pain relief. Physiotherapy is advised to maintain flexibility and range of motion. Stretches, aerobics and strength training exercises are recommended depending on the condition of the sufferer.
Ayurveda views arthritis as the imbalance of Vata Dosha. In Ayurveda, Osteo arthritis is called Sandhigata vata, Rheumatoid arthritis is Aama vata and Gouty arthritis is referred to as Rakta Vata. Ayurveda treats the condition effectively with diet modification, massage and oral formulations. Maha Narayana Taila, Sahacharadi oil, Karpooradi Taila, sesame oil and mustard oil are used for massage. As an extensive treatment method, Panchakarma therapy is recommended. Marma massages, Elakizhi, Pizhichil, Njavarakizhi are common methods of Ayurvedic treatment. Ayurvedic herbs used in the treatment of arthritis include Triphala, Guggul, Boswellia, Turmeric, and more.
Ayurveda also insists on giving in to natural urges (urine, stool, sleep, yawning, sneezing, passing of gas, burp etc.) as the obstruction of these can aggravate Vata imbalance.
